Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the official, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
