The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
