Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
